Gubbio

A couple where we were staying had visited the ancient city of Gubbio and from their revelations we decided that we too would like to take in the sights. Gubbio was about a 45 minute drive from the villa but without question an exceptional historical site, so worth the journey. In tact Roman ruins greet the tourist at the carpark. Access is via a turnstile with a token purchased at the building nearby. Entry to the old city of Gubbio itself is free and tourists can park with relative ease. Observations suggest that this is a well preserved city where preservation and restoration is paramount. During our stay in Italy we had a local cite that they had not had rain for more than 65 days at the villa. In true Ferguson fashion I think that we broke the drought that day. As the shops started to close for their lunch break we made our way to have a light snack. There were no light snacks in Italy, especially when a thunderstorm erupted overhead and delivered drenching rain in minutes that scattered tourists and diners alike. Since the lightning kept interrupting the electricity supply to the restaurant we assumed that we were safer sitting out the storm and we remained inside, in relative comfort. We ordered dolce and espresso in order to avoid the downpour. Later that day we discovered that 8 fellow Ca Camone guests had been caught outside at Gubbio when the storm hit. With no shelter they sat in drenched clothes for their return trip to the villa. Only a few drops of rain had fallen back at the villa. Rain was desperately needed and the earth was so parched it would have celebrated had the rain that fell at Gubbio made its way to La Tavola Marche.
