Portovenere is where the ferry disgorged all and sundry to enable the crew to take a lunch break. We did the same. For a bit of culture in our day we chose the Lord Byron Cafe. rnoon Siesta. Service is often slow but well worth the wait or as has been our recent experience. More birra for Stephen and vino rosso for myself to accompany our salads and crusty bread. The bread continues to surprise us when Italians can do many fine things with their food why is the bread so dry and far too crusty?

I agree, it's pretty awful and the salt-free variety in Tuscany is worse, maybe it's to make us use more oil to soak it in??
