Villa Carlotta

Our tourist guide book made mention of a villa in Tremezzo and as we were returning from Switzerland we came upon it unexpectedly. Unexpected finds warrant further investigation. Garden blooms that bordered every step or pathway were remarkable in colours, abundance and rarity. The trustees who administered the estate were to be commended for their attention to historical detail. Outside the grounds were impeccable. Foliage was lush and unusual. There were walks and arbours and even a cave-like grotto in the garden. The villa's interior was faithfully maintained; complete with an ancient mesh lift to the top floor. Take the lift or take the stairs what a choice? Both were appealing. From the upstairs the views across the lake to Bellagio in one direction and the alps in another, were breathtaking. Sadly, photography of the villa's interior was understandably not permitted. Stephen and I spent some time exploring the garden and strolling beneath an arbour of considerable merit. The site was rather steep and the soft grass tempted one to remove shoes to feel the soft growth between the toes. Fountains and floral displays reflective of themes too numerous to register here made for an afternoon of relaxed exercise as we wondered from one garden to another. It is a must see location for those visiting Tremezzo. For those with an interest in all things botanical Villa Carlotta is worthy of the tourist's attention. From the front gates to the back yard a pleasant afternoon.
